Likewise the bands in gas planets are striated, and certain biomes on terrestrial planets support different types of life forms (plus the bacteria on aquatic plantes only lives at certain latitudes). It definitely does, especially on the dark brown+yellow lava planets, the felsic plasma and metals are roughly aligned with the hot parts, the suspended plasma roughly aligned with the cold parts. I was looking at a lava planet today and the visual lava hotspots didn't match up at all with the heat signatures for felsic magma. From what I saw it looked like the places where you could actually see lava on the planet graphic generally corresponded to the hotspots on the heatmap. Someone else take a look at where Felsic Magma hotspots appear on lava planets.

One thing I noticed that may support this theory is how resources correlate to actual features on the planet. I'd wager that CCP is fairly generous on what it takes to really drag down a hotspot but I have not yet observed this mechanic. I also think there is some invisible grid that determines the amount of resources at any given location. I suspect that the heatmaps as they were on day 1 are the level the planet 'fills' up to such that if a hotspot were killed off and then abandoned it would eventually grow back to its former glory. I think I recall someone from CCP saying it is like digging a hole while someone else is filling the hole in, if you dig faster than they fill you start to diminish the resource. I've seen a lot of varying info on the forums about this. It's been mentioned by the devs that planets DO deplete, but that there is a fixed minimum resource level they will get too, and not deplete further. I don't think planets deplete, you just get less from them if more people are on the same planets you're on. What happens if a planet "depletes" - how long will it take to find usefull deposites again?.Is a planet refilled like the mining belts at downtime - can you somehow know what the regeneration rate is?.I read that planets do have a regeneration rate and so I have some questions that where not answered in my search.
